Description

Climbing the Boulder Flatirons is a classic Colorado experience--an unforgettable blend of moderate climbing, sweeping views and iconic rock formations. These sandstone slabs rise dramatically above the city of Boulder, offering routes for all levels, from beginner-friendly scrambles to more technical multi-pitch climbs.

As your guide, we'll tailor the day to your skill level and goals. Whether it's your first outdoor climb or you're looking to move efficiently on longer terrain, you'll learn essential movement techniques, rope skills, and safe practices -- all while immersed in some of the most stunning scenery the Front Range has to offer.

Expect a full-body workout, expansive views over Boulder and the plains, and the satisfaction of summiting one of Colorado's most photographed natural landmarks.

What can you expect from your day

The Approach:

The Flatirons approach is a moderate hike on well-maintained trails with gradual elevation. Trails vary from packed dirt to gravel and rocky spots. Some routes include short, steep switchbacks over loose rocks. The hike to the base of the Flatirons from popular trailheads like Chautauqua Park takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Parking can be an issue at Chautauqua, particularly on the weekends, so we will carpool from the meeting point. A typical start time is 6am to try to avoid afternoon storms, although sometimes we will start at 1-2pm depending on the day and the weather. The Flatirons can be climbed from the spring through the fall, although based on weather we can also climb in the winter

The Climb:

A climb to the top of the Flatirons a stunning panoramic views of Boulder and the surrounding landscapes. At the base of the Flatirons, your guide will do an equipment check for your roped ascent and start on the climb. Your Flatirons climb will include rock scrambling and moderate rock climbing, and there will be some exposure, making it a memorable adventure for both novice and experienced climbers.

The Descent:

A descent from the Flatirons typically involves navigating steep, rocky terrain and rappelling from fixed anchors to the backside of the Flatirons. From there, you will hike back around to the main climber’s trail. A descent from the Flairons requires careful footing and attention to route finding. Weather conditions can also change rapidly, so be prepared with appropriate gear and clothing.
